When Michael Jordan first came into the league, he was considered to be a great player. He had scored the game winning basket against Georgetown in the NCAA finals game and went on to have a successful sophomore year. Later on, he would average 28 points as a rookie, an unheard of amount. After that first season, people knew Michael was the real deal. Michael Jordan did struggle to keep a strong identity, struggling with his father’s death. He would eventually quit basketball and then return for 3 more NBA titles. By this time, he was considered by some, the greatest player of all time. He did however, return for two more years playing alongside Kwame Brown, but failed to make the playoffs in both of them. He also wanted to be a part of the Wizard’s management, however, was rejected.
Now Michael Jordan is a part owner of the new expansion team, Bobcats. Now when we look at this, why has Michael not distance himself from the game? He was a player, a leader, and now an owner. He is also very close to upcoming star players, as he owns several key high school tournaments, one called the Jordan classic. He is highly respected by many because of his legacy and the way he played the game. Youngsters today all want to have a piece of his name, owning his brand name shoes and products.
Now, let’s ask a quick question, why can’t other players distance themselves from basketball? The reason is because of their love of the game. They may have finished playing the game but they have a link with the game forever. They will find themselves looking at who is good in the league today, who may be good and will probably tune in during important games. Some past players make a new living by being sport reporters, analysts and much more. Some become owners, presidents of teams and coaches and some help mentor and keep the NBA fresh. The game of basketball is a simple game to play but can be something that many will learn to love forever. It has occupied their game and will continue to be a presence in what they do. Who knows? Maybe one day there will be a league for older players who still want to play the game.
So next time you play, make sure that you play with passion. You can never take the game too seriously. This is where the term, one love comes from.
